AmSurf & Volumetric Light by Schmiegel AmSurf & Volumetric Light by Schmiegel
AmSurf animated with volumetric light. The hard 'jumps' in the lighting may result from the fact that a light has no size in MB3D - it's just a point.

Please be patient while 80M load to your cache. After download is done the animation should run smoothly.

The jumps are probably due to Far Plane settings, the light cuts off because it was interrupted by objects hidden by fog....also it depends on whether you are using straight Global lighting or relative to position which will cause the light to change intensity and size in relative position to the oblect, straight it should just arc across the scene at the same position

I used a positional light that moves along the x axis straight through the fractal structure. I think I had some luck that the light isn't passing through fractal structures too often. I'd assume having a zero size the light doesn't fade out when entering the inside of the fractal - it's just off from one frame to another.
So yes - it could be improved :)

Positional, OK I see, yeah you were lucky it didn't in and out of the structure, that's why I figured it was Global, I really like the changing Rays in it really striking. Once a light is activated and intensity set it won't change size except if the position moves closer to or away from the camera and when entering a solid it will will cause it to glow internally. I really don't have a lot of experience with animated Fracs, just played with them some in MB3D, I just don't have the patience needed for a Animation project, I always intend to set aside time to do an extended one but something else always comes up....that age old story, too many things to do too little time

Yep - spare time is limited!
Most of my animations are just done because it's the only way to see some features in motion. But I'm lucky and can access a separate machine that renders a day and a night for me without blocking me from other tasks.
But full of selfishness I'd still encourage you to do animations as I'm convinced that I'd really enjoy them ;-)

That's what I need, a second good machine, I might actually be coming into extra cash in the next few months that would be just the ticket, a machine just dedicated to Animation Rendering wow talk about getting productive, that would be great. I have a few Fly overs and low level wanderings setup in Mojoworkld's QuickTime Virtual Reality Animator I'd like to do also, they take about a week to render each.

That first burst, that opening of the mouth, is outstanding. The light is very cool as it moves in back of the object but it is not satisfying for me. I am distracted away from the unfurling beast by the high contrast light - it 'seemed to' expunge the image at times - I was blinded by the light! I'm sure this is one of many possible unfoldings . . .

I see!
Actually this started as a lighting experiment with an existing static fractal from my gallery. All the movement was added in the end to make it a little more fun to watch - but it wasn't the film's focus.
So I hope I find the time to create another rolling morphing twisting animation as I do love these too. :)
